Gas Strut Fit & Measurement Guide

Replacing a gas lift? Start with measurements, not appearance. Our bar stool and office chair struts suit different base types and height ranges. Neither is a universal-fit replacement. Check the dimensions and mounting connections before ordering.

These are the current product-listing specifications, with the base attachment style confirmed by Butts On Seats. The listings describe the ranges above as “height”; they do not define the exact measurement endpoints or separately specify rod diameter. Confirm those details with us if they are needed to establish fit. A 49 mm base hole and a tapered outer diameter are different measurements, not interchangeable figures.

1. Identify your chair or stool type

Record whether you have a bar stool with a round base or an office chair with a 5-star base. Note the brand, model and any markings on the old strut. Chair/stool type is separate from the strut’s Class 4 safety designation. The correct category alone does not confirm compatibility.

2. Record extended and compressed length

If your chair still adjusts safely, record the strut’s fully extended and fully compressed overall length using the same bottom and top reference points each time. Record where those points are, and photograph them beside a ruler. Do not substitute exposed rod length for overall unit length.

If the ends are hidden, the strut is stuck or it cannot be measured safely, do not force it or guess. Send photos and the measurements you can obtain for a fit check. Compare your measurements with the listed 460–685 mm bar stool range or 280–380 mm office chair range, but ask us to confirm matching endpoints before treating these as exact compressed/extended replacements.

3. Measure canister, rod and mounting diameters

Measure the outside diameter of the wider canister/body and the narrower rod separately, ideally with callipers. Record where each measurement was taken because tapered sections change diameter. Also record the upper seat-mechanism connection diameter and its taper or insertion depth where safely accessible.

Both listings give an outer diameter of 50 mm at the widest point, tapering to 44 mm. They do not provide a separate rod diameter or a fully dimensioned mounting drawing. Do not assume the rod or upper connection matches: send those measurements for confirmation before ordering.

4. Check the base attachment and hole diameter

Some struts are secured by a screw passing up through the underside of the base into the bottom of the strut. The two struts in this guide are not that style: both push into the hole in the base, without a screw fastening through the base into the bottom of the strut. If your existing strut uses that screw-through-base attachment, do not order either as a like-for-like replacement. Contact us to check suitability first.

Measure the internal opening in the base that receives the strut, not the outside of the base or a decorative cover. Both products specify a 49 mm base hole, with the different base types noted above. A matching hole diameter alone does not confirm fit; the attachment style must also match. If the opening is obstructed or cannot be measured safely, send a clear photo and request help rather than dismantling the pressurised unit.

5. Check the seat-height outcome

Measure from the floor to the top of the seat at its lowest and highest usable settings. Record your desired seat-height range and the desk, counter or bar height it needs to suit. Gas-strut length is not finished seat height: the base, seat mechanism, insertion depth and seat thickness all affect the result. Do not assume a longer strut will deliver a particular finished height without checking the assembly.

6. Understand safety class and load limits

Both replacements are listed as Class 4, but their stated support ratings differ: up to 180 kg for the bar stool strut and 200 kg SWL for the office chair strut. These are product-listing ratings for the strut, not a certification of your complete chair or stool, and not a promise that the strut will lift that weight. The seat, mechanism and base may have lower limits. Confirm suitability for the complete assembly before use.

This is a fit-measurement guide, not a dismantling guide. Do not puncture, cut, heat or open a pressurised gas cartridge, or force a stuck unit to obtain a measurement. Ask for assistance if removal or measurement is uncertain.

Pre-order measurement checklist

  • Chair/stool brand, model and base type recorded.
  • Base attachment checked: push-in fit, not a screw passing through the underside of the base into the bottom of the strut.
  • Extended overall length: ___ mm; reference points photographed.
  • Compressed overall length: ___ mm; same reference points used.
  • Canister/body outside diameter: ___ mm; measuring position noted.
  • Rod outside diameter: ___ mm; measuring position noted.
  • Upper seat-mechanism connection diameter/taper and insertion depth recorded where safely accessible.
  • Base-hole internal diameter: ___ mm; base type photographed.
  • Current floor-to-seat height range: ___ to ___ mm.
  • Desired floor-to-seat height range: ___ to ___ mm.
  • Strut markings, safety class and complete chair/stool load limits checked.
  • Any unknown dimensions or mounting details confirmed with Butts On Seats before ordering.
